On May 11, 2016, Sheryl Laughren and Andrea Pike provided a legal update on hot employment topics to the Michigan Assisted Living Association (MALA), sharing important decisions, laws and perspectives on how recent court, administrative and statutory changes impact workforce and human resource management. Their discussion included issues related to the Fair Labor Standards Act (including independent contractors, overtime, breaks and sleeping, and proposed changes to the white collar exemption), personnel file do’s and don’ts, the Michigan Medical Marijuana Act, and work place violence (weapons policy). MALA is a nonprofit organization representing approximately 4,200 assisted living, residential and vocational services programs serving 40,000 individuals statewide.
