A Michigan Legacy with Deep Detroit Roots
Like many of our clients, Berry Moorman is an iconic brand with deep roots in Detroit. Throughout our nearly 100 year history, the firm has served the automotive industry, diverse commercial enterprises, charitable and philanthropic organizations, and notable citizens and families that make up the region’s rich tapestry of commerce and culture.
As Detroit rose to prominence in the first half of the twentieth century, and as streetcars carried workers and families through its bustling streets, Raymond Berry and a group of enterprising attorneys established a new law firm in the city’s historic Penobscot Building.
When the Bureau of Internal Revenue, later renamed the Internal Revenue Service, challenged Ford Motor Company over shareholder profits, Berry joined forces with former U.S. Tax Court Justice James S. Y. Ivins and past Yale President Kingman Brewster to argue before the United States Supreme Court on behalf of minority shareholders, including the John F. Dodge Estate Trust.
The legal victory was a defining moment. Raymond Berry returned home triumphant and built his firm into a trusted legal institution.
Throughout his career, Mr. Berry represented Henry Ford, Edsel Ford, and the Ford Motor Company, and held national leadership roles including Director of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and President of the Detroit Board of Commerce.
In 1949, business litigation and tax attorney A. H. Moorman joined the practice, leading to the formation of Berry Moorman. Since then, the firm has advised clients ranging from startups and family businesses to large corporations, government entities, and charitable institutions.
